Costa Farms originated in Little Canada, Minnesota in 1919. Ron Costa is a third generation produce grower and he moved to White Bear Lake in 1990. The farm acreage increased and diversified when Ron took over in 2000. He also added a bedding plant and hanging basket operation in recent years. This works in conjunction with all the farmers markets and CSA programs they provide for every year, which have always been a community favorite. Lastly, they have a farm roadside veggie stand open in the summer that sees a lot of traffic.
Costa Farms grows sweet corn in 6 varieties, leafy greens, and peppers as their main stable. Leafy greens have become their top seller, while peppers are to this day Ron’s favorite to grow. These particular crops were hand chosen because they grow and produce well in the land, are what the market demands, and what Ron prefers to grow.
Costa Farm uses traditional farming techniques. They added drip irrigation on raised beds with poly mulch. They also use biodegradable plastic on these beds. This produces a healthier plant and allows for less water usage and fertilizer as well.
